2011 New Toyota Matrix Review


The 2011 Matrix is due a minor styling facelift and its sporty and all-wheel-drive (AWD) models will likely get a new engine. The 2011 Matrix will remain basically a station wagon version of the 2011 Toyota Corolla compact sedan but with the additional benefit of available AWD. Toyota is phasing-in the installation of an electronic brake override designed to thwart sudden acceleration and every model-year 2011 Matrix will have the upgrade. Most 2010 models should have it as well.


Wait for the 2011 Matrix if you want the latest styling tweaks or you’re interested in a bit more power. Neither should be compelling enough, however, to pass up a great deal on a 2010 Matrix if you need a compact wagon now. Toyota’s extending generous cash-back and low-interest incentives as it tries to recover from sales lost during the sudden-acceleration recall. Obviously, verify with your dealer that any 2010 Matrix you’re considering has the brake-override system as well as the modified gas pedal and replacement driver’s-side floormat fitted as part of the recall.

The 2011 Toyota Matrix is fuel-efficient and utilitarian, but reviewers say it can’t top its competitors: Its performance is underwhelming, and it doesn’t offer nearly as much cargo space.

The automotive industry finds that 2011 Toyota Matrix is a hodgepodge of highs and lows. Let’s start with the good. The Matrix has some of the highest fuel economy ratings in its class, good cargo space, a comfortable interior and Smart Stop Technology. With a base model and a manual transmission, you can get 26/32 mpg city/highway, figures that are only topped by the Mini Cooper Clubman and Nissan Juke, both of which are too small for most shoppers. 


The Matrix also has a maximum cargo capacity of 49.4 cubic feet, which is plenty of space for hauling groceries or luggage. If you check out the Matrix’s interior, you should be satisfied with driver and passenger seating. The back seat is roomy, and there’s a standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Finally, Toyota added Smart Stop Technology, a system that reduces engine power when the brake pedal and accelerator are pressed at the same time, to the Matrix’s standard features list.

For these reasons, some journalists think the Toyota Matrix is a good choice. “Behold the Corolla wagon,” says Car and Driver. “Sharing its mechanicals with Toyota’s bestselling small car, the Matrix attracts with spacious and practical hatchback utility." However, after testing the Matrix’s sporty S trim and comparing the Matrix to its competitors, other test drivers think there are better affordable compact wagons on the market.


For example, reviewers find the base 1.8-liter engine is acceptable for daily commutes, but report that it’s underpowered compared to the Matrix’s sporty S model and the competition. If you upgrade to the S trim, you’ll still encounter a few problems. Performance is significantly better, but fuel economy plunges to 21/29 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission. That’s down from 26/32 with the base engine and a manual transmission. Plus, the S model starts at about $21,400, which is expensive considering its decent but forgettable performance.

Even if you are satisfied with the performance upgrade, you may be disappointed with interior quality on either trim, which looks and feels inexpensive. Next is cargo space. The Matrix’s maximum cargo capacity is good, but when you compare the Matrix’s figures to its competitors, this wagon is easily bested by the Honda Fit, a hatchback, and the Hyundai Elantra Touring and Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, all of which have more than 57 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

When it comes down to it, the Matrix’s final grade looks pretty grim, and as a result, many reviewers aren’t impressed with this wagon’s complete package. “She's fun around town -- a good commuting car, really,” says Mother Proof . “But in the end, my hard, hard heart wasn't completely sold on the Matrix." But, if you are sold on the Matrix, don’t be discouraged. The Matrix will get you from point A to point B without hassle.

The Toyota Matrix gets a few changes for the 2011 model year. It has new wheels, two engines – down from three last year – standard Smart Stop Technology and an S model that features a 2.4-liter engine and 17-inch wheels. All-wheel drive is optional on the S trim. The base model has a 1.8-liter engine.

Compared to the rest of the class, as well as hatchbacks and compact SUVs, the Matrix is pricey. It starts at about $18,550 for the base model, and reaches about $21,400 for the sportier S model. At this rate you might as well start equipping a Honda Fit or Hyundai Elantra Touring with optional interior features or get a compact SUV.

1969 Aston Martin DB6 Volante


1969 Aston Martin DB6 Volante | As Royal wedding fever was about to wear off, the Prince had one last surprise in store. For many years his Father has been the owner of an Aston Martin DB6 Mark II that was converted to run on biofuel. The car was decorated in traditional wedding fashion complete with ribbons, balloons, and a trick license plate reading Ju5t Wed. The dark blue Volante convertible was driven by the Prince through the crowds in front of Buckingham Palace on his way to a reception party. The car traveled down the procession route with top down and minimal security. A lone Range Rover followed the Aston and a RAF Rescue helicopter, much like the ones flown by the Prince, flew above with a flag waving below.

Other new features included split front and rear bumpers, a redesigned oil cooler opening in the front valance and a higher roof. Like before the Vantage spec option could be ordered which added a V to the chassis number. One of the desirable options was factory air conditioning which used two vents on the rear parcel shelf. Other options included power-assisted steering and a full-length Webasto sunroof.

The engine was almost identical to the DB5 unit having twin overhead camshafts and triple SU carburetors that produced 282 bhp.

In 1969 the Mark II version of the DB6 was launched with flared wheel arches and revised seats.

The DB6 Mark II was announced several years after initial production in 1969. It is defined by new flared wheel arches on both the front and the rear of the car. These help to accommodate wider wheels and tires that increased the handling of the car. In 1966 Aston introduced the convertible version and called it Volante. It was the first time Aston Martin would use this now classic Italian term to denote its convertible models. The rarest of all these cars was the Vantage Volante version, for which only 29 examples exist.

Pre-Indy 500 Solar Car Race In New Mexico Team

100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 this year. In the first week of May, before the air is filled with the raspy voice supercharged engine, iconic racetrack will host the show gasoline-free when 12 teams from around the country race their solar-powered car in the Formula Sun Grand Prix. A group of engineering students from the University of New Mexico will be racing three-wheeled, single seat vehicle, Lobo del Sol, which can hit speeds up to 70 mph.


Four drivers will take shifts because their car lap around the 0.9 mile closed track with the aim of racking the most mileage for three days of racing, explained Olga Lavrova, research assistant professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering university and advisor teams. Pod-like craft resembling a retro science fiction movies, Lobo del Sol is 6 feet and width 16 meters. Array 64-square-foot photovoltaic cells mounted on the front and back of the car to convert sunlight into electricity to run the engine, which uses between one and two kilowatts of power for normal driving. This compares with a microwave oven that uses an average of about 1.5 kilowatts of electricity.

The car also has an on board battery that stores enough energy to power the car for between half an hour and an hour in cloudy conditions or after sunset. The battery can charge from zero to full capacity in about three hours, Lavrora said.

“That’s the beauty of the solar cars: most of the daytime they don’t ever need to be plugged in,” said Lavrora. “If you need some capacity to drive after the sunset that’s when they have to be plugged in.”

“That’s why I am strong believer that solar should become a feature on more cars. A lot of times cars sit in the parking lot and it’s full-blast sunshine and you could be recharging your battery,” she said.

While lightweight cars, like the students’ racer, are readily juiced with solar energy, full-scale commercial solar cars are still a thing of the future since roof-mounted photovoltaic cells produce a minimal amount of electricity. This is because they occupy little space and their ability to function optimally is compromised since they lie flat, instead of being angled toward the sun like photovoltaic cells on buildings, according to MIT’s Technology Review.

Using stationary solar panels to charge the batteries of plug-in hybrids is a cheaper and more efficient way to harness solar power, according to the Review. Fully electric cars, like the Nissan Leaf, can be charged the same way.

However, small buggy-like solar machines do exist. The Venturi Eclectic, an electric car that has solar panels and a wind turbine on the roof, and can also be plugged in to charge, has been on the market since 2007. Popular Mechanics described the vehicle as “very comfortable and manageable as an urban get-around car,” while referring to it as a “golf-cart-on-steroids” with “slightly-better-than-motorcycle crash protection.” The French made car can reach a maximum speed of 30 miles per hour and has a range of 30 miles.

Lavrora pointed to the new Toyota Prius, which comes with the option of having solar cells installed on the roof, as an example of the incorporation of solar technology into car design. The cells do not power the car, but rather run fans that extract hot air from the car when it’s parked, which cools the car down so the air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard.

When asked what she envisages for solar power’s contribution to transportation in 10 years time, Lavrora said she sees people making use of small, solar-powered commuter cars on a “when needed” basis. These cars might form part of car sharing networks, similar to Zipcar, she explained.

Solar power could also be used in more buildings and be used to power streetlamps and traffic lights, she said.

Solar power could already be more widely used, but its implementation is being held back because tax breaks are given to oil and mining companies while very few are given to solar and wind companies, she said.

“And then, of course, you hear the general public complain that solar is so expensive. Well, the truth is gas and oil has been made cheaper for us through subsidies and that’s why nobody is complaining about it,” she said.

2011 Nissan X-TRAIL Review And Specs


Nissan unveiled the first details on their facelift version for the X-Trail SUV. In Japan the new model will go on sale on July 16th, with prices ranging from 2,239,650 yen to 3,139,500 yen.


The 2011 X-Trail comes with a redesigned front grille, front bumper, and headlights. These new features allow the front of the X-Trail to look a bit more bulky yet with a nice rounded finish that was absent in the previous model. On the interior Nissan added large-size meters for better driver visibility, a vehicle information display system, and a glove compartment with heat-retention and refrigerator functions.


A new addition to the line-up is the new X-TRAIL 20GT model. It features a new 2-liter "M9R" Clean Diesel engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission (with manual shift mode).

A new system available in the 4WD models is the Advanced Hill Descent Control system. This system enables the driver to set his or her desired driving speed within the range from 4km/h to 15km/h, depending on the degree of hill grade.


Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the release of the new revised X-TRAIL and the addition of a 6-speed automatic transmission model to the Clean Diesel "X-TRAIL 20GT." Both go on sale July 16th at Nissan dealers nationwide.

The latest refinements to X-TRAIL focus on the exterior, interior and the addition of a new "20GT" Clean Diesel 6-speed automatic transmission model. On the exterior, the front grille, front bumper and headlights have been redesigned to give an even bolder and sportier front-end look. Also, the combination taillights have been changed to LED, improving visibility from following vehicles in bad weather.


In the interior, large-size meters have been adopted for better driver visibility and a vehicle information display system is newly provided to display moment fuel consumption, upcoming maintenance schedules and various other information. In addition, a glove compartment with heat-retention and refrigerator functions is standard on all models.

The versatile utility that only the X-TRAIL can deliver has been further enhanced with the addition of an "Advanced Hill Descent Control" (fitted with a speed-setting function), which can set the desired driving speed suited to road surface conditions, the degree of hill grade or other situations. It has been adopted on 4WD models (except for manual transmission models).

Semper Vivus Lauching to Porshce Museum | As part of the new special exhibition "Ferdinand Porsche - Pioneer of the Hybrid Drive”, the sportscar maker’s museum in Stuttgart is presenting a reconstruction of the first workable full-hybrid car in the world, the “Semper Vivus”. The special exhibition, which begins on May 10, will provide visitors with a fascinating glimpse of the early engineering creations of the young Ferdinand Porsche.

Porsche says it was the first fully-functional full-hybrid car in the world, created and built by Ferdinand Porsche in 1900. Through a meticulous process, Porsche's present-day engineers have made as near an exact recreation of the car as possible. It will be housed in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart after the show.

The teaser video below gives you an idea of what to expect. The full details on the recreation process will be revealed next week. Also joining the Semper Vivus on the stand will be the recently unveiled Panamera S Hybrid.

But Porsche is being as cryptic as possible in the press release here so it could be that an altogether new hybrid vehicle will be debuting next week alongside the European premieres of the 918 RSR hybrid race car concept, the 330 PS (243 kW / 325 bhp) Cayman R, the limited series 911 Black Edition based on the 345 PS (254 kW / 340 bhp) 911 Carrera, and the Boxster S Black Edition.

The 911 Black Edition will be limited to just 1,911 units while the Boxer S Black Edition will get only 987 units made.

2011 Honda CR-V Review


The 2011 Honda CR-V is the best compact crossover for you if your decoder says this one’s name means “good value,” not “lame duck.”


The 2011 Honda CR-V is a virtual rerun of the 2010 Honda CR-V except for addition of an SE trim level to mark the final model year of a compact-crossover design that dates to model-year 2007. Arrival of an all-new 2012 Honda CR-V qualifies the 2011 CR-V as a lame duck. Qualifying it as good value is its roomy, well-designed cabin, fine handling, and a sterling record for reliability and resale value. Incidentally, “CR-V” actually is Honda’s abbreviation for “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.”

In Indonesia in 2010 showed increased business automakers. A number of producers more incentive to launch a new type and variant to enter the market. So also did not want to miss Honda CR-V with the newest. Although the 2011 Honda CR-V is not expected to vary widely from model 2010, she brings to the table excellent reliability. The exterior of the 2011 Honda CR-V will not be significantly changed. The LX, EX, and EX-L models will return as either a front or all-wheel drive variant. The 17-inch wheels that were standard before will remain as well.


The inside of the CRV is very comfortable and functional. Controls are well-placed and nicely designed and the quality of the build is exceptional. Luggage capacity will remain impressive in this class at around 35 cubic feet with the seats up and expanding to more than seventy cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Full power features are standard on all trim levels as is air conditioning, cruise control, sliding and reclining rear seats, a four-speaker stereo system with CD/MP3 player and auxiliary jack and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Base models of the 2011 Honda CR-V boast clean designs and pretty good materials quality. By upping the ante and upgrading to the EX-L, though, drivers can enjoy a decidedly decadent all-leather interior. A Special Edition, or SE, trim is expected for the 2011 CR-V and it should add additional exciting features. Space is ample, as is cargo capacity, making the CR-V a natural choice for families on-the-go.


When the power was increased for the 2010 model year for the CR-V reviewers cheered, but were still a bit disappointed at the lack of a V6 engine, which is what most of the competition offers. Honda’s 4-cylinder is capable…barely…but it is what it is and it doesn’t work miracles. The handling is nice and responsive as is the braking system.

2011 Mazda 2 Specification


The 2011 MAZDA2 is a 4-door, 5-passenger wagon, available in two trims, the Sport and the Touring. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional.

The 2011 Mazda 2 has been completely redesigned inside, outside and underneath. The all-new five-seat, front-wheel-drive subcompact was designed to take on a wide range of competitors, such as the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, and Kia Soul and Rio.


Mazda hasn't been a player in the subcompact market for more than a decade, but that didn't stop enthusiasts from calling on the Japanese automaker to import its world market Mazda2 to North America. That wish has finally come true, while the North American Mazda2 gets some minor changes, considered upgrades, in interior materials and revisions to the audio and climate controls compared to world market versions.

First introduced in 2007, the Mazda 2 has been extremely successful, selling more than 400,000 units in Europe and Asia, and being named World Car Of The Year in 2008. Now, the U.S. market gets the third-generation Mazda 2 before any other market.


The North American Mazda2 more or less mirrors the car sold in essentially every other Mazda market around the globe, aside from upgrades to the interior based on consumer focus groups. The Mazda2 is based on the same platform as the Ford Fiesta, but comes only in five-door hatchback form, and with a different engine and with different transmissions.

Mazda says that the Mazda2 is "Zoom-Zoom concentrated," and that it possesses the sporty soul seen in the automaker's other products - but at a lower price point and in a smaller package. The Mazda2 measures just 155.2 inches in overall length.

The Mazda2 is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit, good for 100 horsepower. A five-speed manual comes standard, with a four-speed automatic on the options list that will set you back an additional $800.

The styling is fresh and we find it arrestingly good-looking. Like all Mazda products of recent vintage, the 2011 Mazda 2 has been made to look much bolder and sportier than its previous incarnations. The body itself has been reshaped in a much more sporty fashion, with more sculpted sides, a laid-back windshield, and a jaunty little rear roof spoiler on one version. There's a new grille, hood, fenders, lamps, bumper and air intakes up front, with new body-colored door handles, new taillamps, a power liftgate, new 15-inch wheels, and exhaust system outlets at the rear. Underneath, there's a redone suspension and an improved braking system.

Standard features include anti-lock braking (ABS), dynamic stability control (DSC) with traction control system (TCS), electric power assist (EPAS) steering system, 185/55/R15 all-weather tires mounted on 15-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, body-colored door handles and power mirrors, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with four speakers, audio auxiliary jack, tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry system, rear window wiper/washer and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats.

Available accessories include a rear bumper guard, wheel locks (Touring models only), all-weather floor mats, cargo net, center console with armrest and auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, Homelink and orange backlit buttons.

Aiming for higher gas mileage without damaging the driving fun, Mazda focused on reducing weight with a vengeance, using a much higher ratio of high-strength steel in the body to lose 50 pounds, or 10 percent of the body's weight, with more welds and more weld-bonded adhesives in the body and its openings. And then they looked for hundreds of places to save a few pounds, like the wiring harness, the door locks and latches, the engine's radiator, the automatic transmission shifter, the pedals, and even the speakers in the stereo system. The final result was a car that weighs just a bit over 2300 pounds in basic form, a five-door hatch that is actually lighter than a two-seater Miata.

We climbed in and found the seats comfortable and supportive and we liked the thick, sporty steering wheel. Although rated as a five-seater, we wouldn't subject a fifth person to the back seat, the same as we wouldn't for any car in this class. The Mazda 2 is relatively roomy for four, though. Fold the rear seats down and it offers good cargo capacity with 27 cubic feet of cargo space and easy hatchback accessibility.

Out on the road, we found the Mazda 2 fun to drive. The little engine is gutsy, with a sporty note at upper revs. Shifting the manual five-speed is easy and enjoyable. The new brakes are responsive, with no annoying slack in the pedal travel. The new electric steering is responsive. The new suspension tuning minimizes body lean in corners yet ride quality is smooth and comfortable. It maneuvers rewardingly in tight driving situations, making it easy to park or thread through thick traffic.

The Mazda2 is available in six exterior colors: Brilliant Black Clearcoat, Liquid Silver, True Red, Crystal White Pearl, Aquatic Blue and Spirited Green.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu ECO Review |Next to the 2013 Malibu, Chevrolet also brought at the New York Auto Show the Eco version, a model that comes equipped with new fuel-saving eAssist technology. The new Eco version will be sold next to the Malibu LS, LT and LTZ version starting the summer of 2012.

The 2013 Malibu is Chevy’s latest efforts in creating more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly cars and is one that will be sold in 100 additional countries next to the US of A.

Power comes from a basic 2.4L Ecotech direct-injection four-pot paired with an electric motor-generator that prides itself as being only 65 pounds, which is an impressive feat. All of that power is transferred through a new six-speed automatic. The result is a total of 180 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque from the four-banger with an extra 15 hp available from electric power assistance during heavy acceleration.

The eAssist mild-hybrid Eco model doesn't look appreciably different from the standard 2.5-liter range, despite registering 26 mpg in the city and 38 out on the highway. Alterations include 17-inch wheels on low rolling-resistance tires, four underbody shields that cover about 50 percent of the vehicle's dirty bits, as well as model-specific side mirrors and the expected badging.

Inside, more Camaro influence can be seen thanks to items like the 'squircle' gauges. Materials are noticeably richer than before, and high-end detailing like contrasting ice blue stitching on the LTZ's leather seats and increased ambient lighting lend the cabin a more premium aura.

Malibu ECO is among the first in the midsize segment with a fuel-saving, active shutter system in the lower grille. The Malibu ECO’s active shutter system automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aero performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. The shutter is open or closed based on engine coolant temperature and speed. For example, the shutters open when the car is traveling up a hill, pulling a trailer, or in hot city driving; the shutters close at highway speeds when engine cooling is less required.

2011 Volvo S60 R design


2011 Volvo S60 R-Design comes with a range of specially developed design details both outside and in. On the outside the Volvo S60 R-Design have an imposing redesigned front with a grille painted in glossy piano black. The sporty stance is further enhanced with colour-matched body components, details in matt special finish and a hexagonal pattern that is repeated both front and rear. Distinctive twin exhaust tailpipes and unique five-spoke 18-inch Diamond cut wheels emphasise the sporty overall appeal.

Under its performance line, R-Design, the Swedish automaker gave their resident sedan a welcome change on both its looks and engine output. Together with the XC60 R-Design, the S60 R-Design made its debut at the New York Auto Show and is set to go on sale later this summer.

To improve handling, Volvo engineers installed a strut brace, shorter springs (which reduce ride height 15mm), and stiffer bushings (20% firmer than the standard model). On top of this, they also added monotube rear dampers and Corner Traction Control which uses torque vectoring to reduce understeer.The R-Design package will be available with a variety of engines including everything from the 115 bhp (86 kW / 117 PS) 1.6-liter D DRIVe to the 304 bhp (227 kW / 308 PS) 3.0-liter T6.

The S60 concept featured a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a dual-clutch automated manual transmission; the pair should be in production shortly, but it’s unknown if the small four would make it to this side of the Atlantic in the S60. The production car will, however, get the concept’s pedestrian-detection technology, which will fully apply the brakes if it detects you’re going to make a Swedish meatball out of someone in the crosswalk. Other features of the S60 concept that are candidates to make it to the real car are a second-gen radar cruise-control system, lightweight composite body panels, and a grille shutter than can close to reduce aero drag.

New Cars 2010 Jaguar XK


New Cars 2010 Jaguar XK ranks 5 out of 9 Super Luxury Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 75 published reviews and test drives of the Jaguar XK, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

For example, the new XK has received a set of all-new headlight units that are not only slimmer (by 15mm) than the ones they replace but now feature subtle LED daylight running lights alongside intricately styled reflector units.

These sit above a new, larger oval grille framed in chrome with mesh in the center that, in the case of the XKR, is finished in black. Mounted either side of the grille are a pair of small air scoops feeding air to the brakes

Jaguar attempts to make the cabin tech interface as lovely as everything else, but ends up with a menu system that looks like 1990s Web design. This interface, built on Adobe Flash, slides menu buttons in from the left side of the screen, slick animation that ultimately proves more spectacle than practical.

We found ourselves having to drill down through multiple menus to choose music from a connected iPod, place a phone call, or enter a destination in the navigation system, too frequently pulling our attention from the road. There is also a voice command system, but it only offered the basics, not sophisticated enough to let us dial contacts by saying a person's name or choose music.

The XK can be ordered with 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels. A navigation system with a seven-inch LCD touch screen is standard. Other features include front and side airbags, stability control, Burl Walnut or satin-finish Poplar trim, and keyless entry and start.
Options include a 525-watt Alpine premium sound system, Sirius satellite radio, soft-grain leather, a leather-wrapped instrument panel, and a heated steering wheel.

Breakthrough Scientists "Solar Without Cells"

It would seem foolish not to continue the great methods to try to harness this power affordable. But solar technology now relies on solar cells are still rather expensive and often has a durability problem.

Researchers have discovered a novel new effect which produces energy when intense light passes through an insulating material like glass, creating a strong magnetic field. (Source: Galucci's Catering).

That's why a new breakthrough in alternative energy at the University of Michigan is very interesting. Promise of solar power - without the expensive cells.

No, this is not a novel scheme of photosynthesis. The new technology relies on the principle of physics that were previously regarded as a trivial side note.

Magnetic Solar Energy -- a Radical Breakthrough

Light has two components -- magnetism and electricity. All solar cells currently utilize the electric effects of light. The magnetic nature of photons was dismissed as too weak to be of any use.

But Stephen Rand, a professor in the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Physics and Applied Physics at U of M, was fascinated by this property. He wondered whether it could be somehow put to use.

During his investigations he discovered something unexpected. When light passes through a strongly insulating material, its normally weak magnetic output is profoundly multiplied and a relatively strong magnetic field results.

In fact, the field is 100 million times stronger than previously expected -- strong enough to produce the kind of large magnetic effect needed for power generation.

Professor Rand admits the results will shock many physicists. He states, "You could stare at the equations of motion all day and you will not see this possibility. We've all been taught that this doesn't happen. It's a very odd interaction. That's why it's been overlooked for more than 100 years."

How it Works

The magnetic effect comes from a unique type of "optical rectification". Optical rectification is a general physics term that refers to what light does when it enters certain materials.

Previously, the best-known type of optical rectification was the charge separation that light created when passing into certain kinds of crystalline materials (like crystalline silicon). This electric effect produces a voltage and is the foundation of modern solar cells.

Professor Rand and his Ph.D. candidate student, William Fisher, discovered a radical new type of optical rectification. In certain materials, they found, the magnetic field of light was strong enough to bend electric charges into a 'C' shape.

Describes Fisher, "It turns out that the magnetic field starts curving the electrons into a C-shape and they move forward a little each time. That C-shape of charge motion generates both an electric dipole and a magnetic dipole. If we can set up many of these in a row in a long fiber, we can make a huge voltage and by extracting that voltage, we can use it as a power source."

So what's the catch? Ah, there's always a catch with anything that seems great, it seems.

The "catch" here is the material. In order to exhibit this effect, light must be shown on an insulator like glass. Glass, however, needs incredibly intense light to produce this effect -- 10 million watts per square centimeter. Normal sunlight only produces around 0.012 watts per square centimeter when shining.

Applications

One solution would be to create hardware to magnify the intensity of incoming sunlight, similar to the technique used in concentrated solar cells.

Mr. Fisher states, "In our most recent paper, we show that incoherent light like sunlight is theoretically almost as effective in producing charge separation as laser light is. To manufacture modern solar cells, you have to do extensive semiconductor processing. All we would need are lenses to focus the light and a fiber to guide it. Glass works for both. It's already made in bulk, and it doesn't require as much processing. Transparent ceramics might be even better."

Using novel materials, he and his professor expect that the necessary intensity for the effect can be dropped to much lower levels. They postulate that the sunlight conversion efficiency of cells with such new materials could likely reach 10 percent -- on par with current generation solar cells.

They say the costs associated with such magnetic solar power devices would be much lower, though, as they use non-rare materials like amorphous silicon (glass) and don't rely on expensive processes like semiconductor fabrication.

What's Next?

Professor Rand and his student will experiment this summer with producing electricity from intensified sunlight and from laser light -- a directly intensified form of light. After that wraps up, they hope to look into novel materials to exploit the novel effect at lower intensities.

The team also states that it is in the process of patenting their discovery, as it may one day grow into a lucrative power source.

2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Review


2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Review will be produced in Canada. This sedan will be developed with Electronic Stability Program, ABS with emergency brake assist, and two-stage front airbags with passenger weight sensors, etc. The elective safety features are ultrasonic rear object detection, self-sealing tires, Xenon HID headlamps, and rear/front side air curtain bags. Coming to towing capacity, this vehicle can tow up to 3800 Lbs.

The 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 is going to make its debut today at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The new model features a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine capable of developing 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet (630 Nm) of torque. The power increase over the old model is 40 hp and 45 lb-ft (61 Nm) of torque. The transmission available for the model is a five-speed automatic and in the near future, the automatic gearbox will be fitted with paddle shifters to allow drivers to shift some gears.

The 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 also features an Adaptive Damping Suspension (ADS) system that is tuned for a comfortable and direct ride. The ADS system uses a wide range of on-road and driver inputs – such as vehicle speed, steering angle, steering speed, brake torque, throttle position and lateral and vertical accelerations – to automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions when necessary.

However, even with these elevated power numbers, an estimated 25 percent fuel economy increase on the highway is expected thanks to a new for 2012 active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver cylinder deactivation technology to engage over a wider rpm range. The new active exhaust system also allows for straight-through mid and rear mufflers for a throaty exhaust note under engine load.

The best ways to save money is not drive at all and just stay home, sit in front of your computer all day long! Most of us can't do that because we must drive to work and we live in a society where driving is a necessity. How many miles are you getting from a gallon of gas? There will be no expensive cars in this post and none of the cars here will reach 0-60 in 5 secs, but these cars will save you money on gas every year. Lets see...

1. Toyota Prius: 51 City/48 Hwy (50 Combined), Base Price: $23,050. 1.8-liter, with 4-Cylinder engine and 134 hp, 0-60 mph in 9.8 secs. The most fuel efficient car on the market is the Toyota Prius, also the most demanding car in the U.S. A small sedan, but roomy enough for 5 and it is perfect for those that drive over 100 miles a day to work. The 3rd Generation Toyota Prius model is on sale since 2009 and currently available for purchase at most Toyota dealers.


2. Lexus CT 200h: 43 City/40 Hwy (42 Combined), Base Price: $29,120. 1.8-liter, with 4-Cylinder engine and up to 134 hp, 0-60 mph in 9.8 secs. Why not have both luxury and fuel efficiency in one car? The Lexus CT 200h does just that by offering great gas mileage with a luxurious feel. Wow your friends and colleagues with a whopping 42 mpg in a Lexus.



3. Honda Civic Hybrid Tie for third are the Honda cars, which both give an estimated combined 41 mpg. The Civic Hybrid has more room and cargo space, while the Insight is much more affordable.
Honda Civic Hybrid: 40 City/43 Hwy (41 Combined), Base Price: $23,950. 1.3-liter, 4-Cylinder engine with 110 hp, 0-60 mph in 11.3 secs.


4. Ford Fusion Hybrid in the fourth spot are two contenders from Ford Motors with each having a combined 39 mpg. These hybrids are packed with a powerful engine which give out 191 hp. The Fusion Hybrid is more affordable. Ford Fusion Hybrid: 41 City/36 Hwy (39 Combined), Base Price: $28,405. 2.5-liter, 4-Cylinder engine with 191 hp. 0-60 mph in 8.4 secs.


5. Honda CR-Z or Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Ranking in fifth place is a duel between the H companies; CR-Z and the Sonata Hybrid each has a estimated combined 37 mpg. Honda offers a sporty coupe at a comfortable price range while Hyundai offers a full sedan with great gas mileage.

Honda CR-Z: 35 City/39 Hwy (37 Combined), Base price: $19,345. 1.5-liter, 4-Cylinder engine with 122 hp. 0-60 mph in 9.7 secs.



Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: 35 City/40 Hwy(37 avg.) Base Price: $25,795. 2.4-liter, 4-Cylinder engine with 206 hp. 0-60 mph in 9.2 secs.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Long Wheelbase feature China is the market for extended-wheelbase variants and Rolls-Royce has introduced the new Ghost Extended Wheelbase edition at Auto Shanghai today.

The wheelbase of this stretched Ghost is 170 mm (6.7 inches) longer than on the standard model and good for twice as much knee room, says Rolls-Royce

An extended-wheelbase motor car was planned in the early days of the Rolls-Royce Phantom project. Indeed, an aluminium space frame chassis was chosen precisely because it lends itself to structural adaptation with relative ease. This ability to create coach-worked models, to meet the individual needs and desires of Rolls-Royce customers, is something that has been central to the marque throughout its 100-year history. The standard Phantom body is already the largest automotive aluminium space frame ever constructed while the new extended wheelbase model adds nearly 10 inches.

The extra length with this new motor car is achieved simply by using longer extrusions in the construction of the body. Conventional extended-wheelbase cars are often built by cutting them and welding in extra metal - not so with Rolls-Royce. As a result of this approach, none of the Phantom's torsional rigidity is lost, so the outstanding dynamic performance and driving refinement of the standard length motor car are maintained.

The powertrain should remain unchanged, which means a 6.6-liter turbocharged V-12 engine matched to a ZF 8-speed and delivering 563 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque will be lurking under the hood.

In addition to the new long wheelbase model, both coupe and convertible versions of the Ghost are due to hit the streets in the next couple of years but their development is not guaranteed. Rolls-Royce will be unveiling concept versions of the cars first to gauge customer demand. Another model potentially in the pipeline is a gasoline-electric hybrid version.
